Yes, Molly had her first dentist appointment on Friday. Apparently nowadays they're recommending the first trip to the dentist be 6 months after the first tooth pops through or at 1 year old...whichever comes first.
We were just a few months late.
We went to see a pediatric dentist recommended by our pediatrician. This practice is huge. The waiting room below is one of two and, yes, that is an all-games-are-free arcade.
Molly was pretty apprehensive, as you can imagine. At this age, they just want them to be briefly checked, give her a positive experience, and (of course) tell me what I'm doing wrong and what I should change.
The dentist is always annoying like that.
The dental hygienist was very nice and tried really really hard to get Molly to warm up to her but Mol could sense something was going on and would only lay on my shoulder.
Luckily, they are super open to doing things however she needed so she got her teeth brushed will sitting on my lap in a regular chair.
And then when the doc came in, he had her lay down on my lap facing me with her head on his knees. This way she could see me and I could hold her hands and stuff.
For both, the teeth brushing and the doc look, she cried but they were really really really fast and then once they were done she was ok. Especially cuz Wubbie was waiting.
She has 10 teeth (old news) and that is right on for her age. They all look great.
He did warn me that her labial frenum (that piece of skin that connects your upper lip to your gums) is on the low side. I call it a warning because this makes it more likely that when she inevitably falls and smashes her face she is more likely to tear it and apparently it bleeds a lot. Basically, he was telling me not to freak out if that happened. Unfortunately, if she doesn't do this on her own, some kids end up needing to have it snipped. But that is way down the road.
I am, of course, giving her too much sugar. I think that was a given though. But, to balance that out, we started brushing right when we were supposed to, we're doing it the right amount per day, and in the right way.
And, it's it some kind of rule that you have to ignore the dentist?
They said her teeth are spaced perfectly and, given that Ryan and I both avoided braces, they like her chances for all not needing them. Woohoo!
And, Molly really liked her swag bag.

First, I have to say that this practice is one of the most fun-looking places I've seen! Free arcades? Awesome. Anyway, it's good to see that dentist didn't tried to enforce protocol in the checkup. That tends to get the kids cranky, leading to a horrible first trip to the dentist. Though it sucks that she tried, I think Wubbie and the swag bag more than made up for it.

Agreed! They were great and she did as well as expected. Can't wait to see what our next checkup in December has in store for us!
